Let’s keep this one simple: the sidecut profile of a ski affects how large or small of a turn a ski will naturally make. Most backcountry skis are loosely based on a traditional sidecut.
Slalom features the shortest course of any of the disciplines, so naturally it makes sense to start there. A technical discipline, slalom has "gates" (the sets of poles along the course) that skiers must ski between. The gates are set extremely close together, so it requires quick, tight turns to do well. As we all know, the fastest path between two points is a straight line, meaning that skiers try to minimize how much they have to turn to get through each gate. In doing so, you'll see skiers hit the gates with their hands or shins to get them out of the way. Slalom looks like chaos on the course, what with the strange alignment to the poles, but it's fast and technical, lending to its appeal.

If there's rocker in the ski, at the tip or tail or both, you may want to size your ski a little differently. Depending on the degree of tip rocker, the point of contact with the snow will move lower down the ski length. The same is true of tail rocker: a generously rockered tail will shorten the amount of contact the rear of the ski makes with the snow surface. Rockered skis therefore "ski shorter" than a traditionally cambered ski with the same measured length. If you're buying a rockered ski, feel free to add a few centimeters to your size range, and we don't recommend going shorter if you're moving from a more traditional ski to an aggressively rockered model.
