The ten essentials are the ten pieces of gear that every hiker should bring out when them on the trail, whether on a short hike or multi-month through hike. The ten essentials were invented in the 1930s to help people enjoy the outdoors safely. It was an era before helicopter evacuations and satellite beacons; the ten essentials were designed to help folks stay alive outside. Today the ten essentials still hold true at their core, but can be improved upon with the help of new gear and technology. Here’s my take on the hiking essentials; this is what i take on every hike and what you should too.
A light, inexpensive, fast and effective water purification and hydration system: sawyer squeeze filter and water treatment tablets yes, bring a prudent amount of extra water because human beings don’t do well without it. For hiking in the desert, extra water would likely be right after navigation tools on the essentials list. But for most hiking and backpacking in the us, water is usually available every few hours. With a filter like the sawyer squeeze you can drink immediately at water sources. This means both quick, effective hydration/purification and less water to carry. An even lighter alternative (and backup system for a filter) are water treatment tablets.

Photos by wendy chan we are fortunate to enjoy great weather year around in los angeles, and our close proximity to the local mountains, desert, and coast makes hiking one of the  favorite activities for many angelenos. I find hiking a regenerative escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and an opportunity to immerse myself in the native landscape. Luckily for us, even when we can’t get out far from the city, there’s nature to be found nearby.
“how had i lived here three years,†the native of connecticut thought, “and not known there was a mountain range here?†making up for lost time, schreiner, a tv writer by day, began exploring the mountains on weekends, often with a hiking friend at the office. He was floored, he said, that so much wilderness exists around such a big city, much of it invisible to the masses.
Griffith park is los angeles’ playground and a 4,210-acre escape valve from urban life. From the 70 miles of hiking and equestrian trails to the ever-popular griffith observatory and los angeles zoo, the park attracts between 10 and 12 million visitors a year. Casey schreiner, editor of the modern hiker website, knew the park, but it wasn’t until he moved to thai town that griffith park became his go-to hike. He then began to discover “how cool and unusual a place it really is,†he said.

I hiked mt. San antonio as a loop route with some friends. We started at the manker flats trailhead (national parks adventure pass required), taking the winding fire road up baldy notch, then hiking the devil’s backbone to the summit. Our return route took us down the steep baldy bowl trail, passing the sierra club ski hut and san antonio falls on the way back to manker flats.

Modern hiker was founded by casey schreiner in december, 2006 as a way to document his explorations around the los angeles area as he learned how to hike, transitioning from an indoor kid who actively avoided sunshine to a seasoned hiker who has trekked challenging trails all over the world.
Career[ edit ] modern hiker began as a personal outdoor blog. Schreiner's first post was on december 10, 2006. The blog began to pick up attention as he posted more articles and guides about los angeles-area trails. Schreiner has become somewhat of a public figure in the outdoors community, covering both local and national issues. He gained substantial public attention during his campaign to combat graffiti in national parks, including breaking national news with the story of casey nocket's vandalism spree across several national parks in the american west. Schreiner also broke the national news story of graffiti artist mr. André 's vandalism of joshua tree national park. Mr. André attempted to threaten modern hiker with legal action for outing his actions, but the threats were eventually dropped when saraiva paid a fine to the park.
I mean, ok, fine let’s get the plug out of the way first, right? if you’ve been reading modern hiker and you live in the los angeles area and you haven’t picked up a copy of my first book , now is the time to fix that. It’s 125 hikes all around the l. A. Area, which i define as pretty much all of los angeles county and slices of neighboring ventura, san bernardino, and orange counties. I got to choose the trails highlighted in this book, and the idea was to include trails so that no matter where you live in this great big messy sprawl of a town, there’s a solid outdoor experience within a 30-40 minute drive from your front door (on a weekend morning when the freeways are open).

Trailblazing role: writer and subaru/leave no trace traveling trainer location: the great lakes to the gulf i’m a modern hiker because: i talk about belonging, difference, race, and context both on trail and online. I met amanda jameson last summer on a windswept saddle in the high sierra and recognized her immediately. In lieu of a normal greeting (and probably under the influence of mild hypoxia), i simply blurted out, “i read your blog!†a bit of surprise flashed across her face (and embarrassment across mine) and she thanked me. After the brief encounter, i ventured up the trail and never saw her again – but i kept reading.

Schreiner is also the man behind modern hiker , a website he started in 2006 to catalogue all of the hikes he took around southern california, and which has grown to include hikes throughout the western u. S. For avid hikers like schreiner, griffith is often overlooked because it feels too urban, too crowded and not challenging enough. But schreiner has come to see it differently. “if you think of griffith park that way, you’re really shortchanging a huge swath of the park,†he says. “from a hiker’s perspective, i was interested in sort of highlighting an area that was not as enjoyed by hikers as much as the san gabriels and santa monicas are. â€.
