You use specialty wedges like sand, lob and gap wedges for short pitches from the fairway and blasting out of sand bunkers. They fall just below the pitching wedge in loft, at around 50 to 64 degrees. The club heads have various amounts of bounce, a quality produced by the thickness and angle of the sole of the club. More bounce is desirable for shots from sand or soft turf, but pitch shots from firmer ground are easier to hit with clubs with little or no bounce. Golfers often carry several wedges with different lofts and bounce angles for use from a variety of distances and lie conditions.

In 1961, british oil workers built the emirate’s first golf course as a side project to their pursuits in oil. Naturally, the environment’s ground meant that the first golf course in the country would be sand. Through trial and error, workers created optimum green surfaces (known as ‘browns’) by mixing the sand and oil to create golf terrain that is slower but truer. For fully sanded courses, golfers could even be permitted to bring astroturf with them to avoid the feeling of continuous bunker shots. They were taken over by emerging green golf courses shortly afterwards, though they are an interesting alternative to standard types of golf courses.
Golf courses require grass that can repair quickly and withstand heavy traffic. Commonly referred to as "turf grass," the grasses used on golf courses are traditionally tough, fast-repairing grasses that can withstand plenty of traffic. Grass on golf courses differs from region to region based on how the grass will stand up to heat or cold. Different grass may also be used on the tee box, fairway and greens, though greens are often planted with some variety of poa.
